Glassmakers “Connected by Hands and Hearts”

Jablonec nad Nisou, 21. 8. 2024

12 glass artists, 6 countries and 1 entry on the UNESCO list. This is the essence of the international glass symposium called CONNECTED BY HANDS AND HEARTS, which the Jablonec Museum of Glass and Jewellery is following up on last year’s joint inscription of handmade glass production on the UNESCO Intangible Heritage List.

In the new project, the Museum of Glass and Jewellery in Jablonec nad Nisou has brought together twelve glassmakers from six countries, including glassworks from North Bohemia. The participants will have a two-day creative symposium, seminar and exhibition in the Lemberk Granary, and the joint creation will culminate in the Kristiánov Glass Festival. The event takes place from 2-7 September and is under the auspices of the international UNESCO headquarters in Paris. The entire project was supported by the National Recovery Plan, Mobility III programme. The exhibition, which is also an official part of the XV. The exhibition, which is also part of the XV International Glass Symposium of the IGS, will be open until 6 October.

The objectives of the joint inscription of handmade glass production in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity include deepening knowledge about the tradition and present of glassmaking crafts and their popularization towards the public. And also the mutual transfer of experience between the glassmakers of all six countries, in a word, cooperation. “We have therefore taken advantage of the opportunities offered by the Mobility Programme and prepared this year’s second international glass symposium with an accompanying programme. The first one, Czech-Spanish, took place in May at the La Granja glassworks. We were very pleased with the interest of the glassworks operators, who were very helpful. It is a confirmation for us that such events make sense to them as well”, said Milada Valečková, Director of the Jablonec Museum. Personally, I am looking forward to the glassmaking show at Kristiánov, where the symposium participants will create together at the mobile furnace of Florian’s smelter, under the supervision of the festival visitors,” she added.

Artists from six countries were selected by the curator of the symposium Petr Nový in collaboration with foreign colleagues. He is also the author of the concept of the exhibition, which will present not only works from the two-day creative process in the selected steelworks, but also examples of typical works of individual participants. “We have chosen metallurgical blown and decorated glass directly at the glass furnace as the theme, because this is a technique popular and very widespread in all six countries. A technique that really unites us,” said Nový.

The artists will be accompanied to the Crystal Valley by members of the official working group that was set up last year at the first meeting in Spain. They will take part in an official meeting at the museum and present glassmaking in the participating countries during the seminar. “For most of them, this will be their first visit to the Czech Republic. Their programme will therefore focus on getting to know both live glass production and the museum’s exhibitions. We will also discuss the possibilities of further cooperation and joint projects,” concluded Valečková.
